Anaesthesia Safety Application
-
Adverse Event, Near Miss and Case Log self-audit and reporting tool for Anaesthetists and Registrars.
-
Access via any PC or MAC with internet access.
Our applications provide mobile Anaesthetists with secure and accessible “front ends” to existing hospital and practice based clinical and risk management systems.
Our applications are web based, customised for specific craft groups and are capable of receiving from, and sending data back to, the hospital and practice based systems.
Our existing Anaesthesia Safety application has been used at the Alfred, Austin, Royal Melbourne and Geelong hospitals in Victoria over the past 2 years as part of the Victorian Anaesthesia Safety (VAS) project...click here
In that time, more than 22,000 cases and 900+ Adverse Events were recorded in our application.
In 2010, Adverse Event reporting will be mandatory in Victoria. The enabling legislation is the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008.
To support this, we released a new version of our Anaesthesia Safety application in February 2010.
Adverse Event Self Audit and Reporting
Anaesthetic Registrars, Consultants and VMOs can capture Adverse Events (numerator data) for discussion at M&M meetings and incident reporting purposes and Case Details (denominator data).
Cases worthy of being discussed at M&M meetings can then be easily presented directly from the application during M&M meetings and the resulting action items and attendee attendances entered.
It is a self audit as well as reporting tool for adverse events and near misses.
A de-identified version of the numerator and denominator data is made available by the user to the Anaesthesia Safety audit if the hospital has signed the Privacy and Confidentiality agreement.
In developing the first version of the Adverse Event application, significant work was done by the four hospitals in developing the event classifications. The new version supports data feeds from hospital theatre systems to reduce data entry and improve quality of data. It also has significantly more powerful reporting tools.
Case Log
The Case Log enables Registrars to record details of their cases and procedures required for the ANZCA Learning Portfolio from anywhere and at anytime via PCs, MACs, Windows SmartPhones, PDAs and iPhones.
Registrars can record:
-
Time they spend on cases.
-
Anaesthetic procedures undertaken with a success/failure.
-
ANZCA modules.
-
Their experience and reflective learning.
Data collected in the Case Log is not reported to the Anaesthesia Safety project but Registrars will find it extremely valuable in reviewing their cases with their supervisors and for completing their ANZCA Learning Portfolio.
The application tracks the user’s progress on ANZCA modular requirements and enables users to create CUSUM graphs (CUSUM or “Cumulative Summation” is a means of detecting a change in the performance of a process or individual).
Users can filter preformatted reports with the abilty to customise content.
